Graphic of thief making off with pirated content to illustrate our article on freebooting.

Attention, content creators and digital enthusiasts! Today, we want to shine a spotlight on a concerning form of online piracy known as “Freebooting.”

What is it?

Freebooting is a sneaky practice where YouTube videos are downloaded and re-uploaded on other platforms, most notably on Facebook, without the original creator’s permission.  It was coined by the podcasting duo Brady Haran and CGP Grey of “Hello Internet,” and the practice is rampant on social media platforms, where freebooters re-upload content to gain views, followers, and potentially, ad revenue, leaving the original content creators high and dry.

The alarming rise of freebooted content on social media platforms has repercussions for content creators. Imagine pouring your heart and soul into creating engaging videos, only to have them hijacked and shared without credit or compensation. This not only robs creators of their hard-earned recognition, but also undermines their ability to sustain their creative endeavors.

Freebooting is a clear case of copyright infringement, violating the intellectual property rights of content creators. Unfortunately, combating this issue isn’t as simple as pressing a “Report” button. The process of taking down unauthorized content can be time-consuming and frustrating, making it challenging for creators to protect their work effectively.

Social media platforms are the high seas where these modern-day pirates operate. While these platforms have policies against copyright infringement, enforcement can be inconsistent. The sheer volume of content uploaded every minute makes it challenging to police, and the reporting process can be slow and cumbersome. It’s a bit like trying to catch a pirate ship with a dingy.

Despite the challenges, there’s a silver lining on the horizon. Awareness about freebooting is growing, thanks to the efforts of content creators, influencers, and industry advocates. They’re rallying the troops, so to speak, to fight against this form of digital piracy. Moreover, some social media platforms are taking steps to address the issue. They’re developing more sophisticated content identification systems and streamlining the reporting process.

If you value original content and respect the hard work of creators, there are some steps you can take to combat the practice:

1️⃣ Educate: Spread awareness about freebooting and its consequences among your friends, family, and followers. Let them know the importance of supporting content creators and respecting copyrights.
2️⃣ Report: If you come across a video that seems suspicious or violates copyright, report it to the platform and, if possible, inform the original creator about the infringement.
3️⃣ Support: Show your appreciation of content creators by subscribing to their official channels, sharing their videos from legitimate sources, and engaging with their content directly.
4️⃣ Watermarking: Content creators can consider adding watermarks or logos to their videos to deter freebooters and establish ownership.
5️⃣ Platform Awareness: Encourage social media platforms to implement stricter policies against freebooting and provide better tools for creators to protect their content.

Remember, creators invest their time, creativity, and resources to entertain, educate, and inspire us. Let’s support the original artists who make the digital world a more interesting place.
